Geography

At Headlands, our geography curriculum builds children's understanding of their own location in the world and moves outwards as children move through school. This creates a clear progression in learning and a child centred perspective in geographical location and understanding of the world. Our curriculum focuses on the following:

My Location - What do I know about where I live?

Locational Knowledge - The names and locations of things in the world

Place knowledge - What places and features are like, making comparisons

Physical and human features - the way our world is shaped by nature and civilisation

Field work and geographical skills - map skills, observation and data handling/analysis

Each year group also look at a case study within their units centred on a place in the world and building understanding of 'geographical stories' such as why certain countries experience natural hazards.

We use creative approaches within our curriculum such as messy mapping, as well as formal learning to help children interpret the world geographically. Children attain agreed knowledge in the subject area which progresses through school.
