Useful Information for Year 5
Reading Books
Children are guided by their teachers to select appropriate books from our library. Please ensure children bring their reading books to school every day, and that home reading is recorded in their reading record.
Seesaw
At Headlands, we use the Seesaw App to communicate with parents. Seesaw is a secure online journal where we can share what your children are learning in class. You can find out more information and a link to download the app here.
PE
PE is on a Monday, so please ensure that children come to school in their correct PE kit. Longer hair should be tied up, and any earrings should be removed. Thank you for your support!
Swimming is on a Tuesday morning. Please ensure your child brings their swim kit, including a swimming cap, goggles and a towel.
Homework & Spellings
- Daily reading at home
- Times Table Rockstars (5 minutes per day)
- Spelling Shed (practise 3 times per week)

Learning in Year 5
In Year 5, children put their previous learning to use in Upper Key Stage 2. The curriculum is more demanding as they approach Year 6 and we begin work to prepare them for the end of their primary journey here. Teachers will also support them on a personal level as the children begin to get older and more independent in their thinking.
Reading – children develop further fluency in our whole class reading lessons. Here we focus on accuracy, pace, flow and emphasis. Children are taught how to read longer texts well. Our comprehension lessons focus on retrieval and inference (finding meaning), prediction and summary. Vocabulary is taught within lessons. We explore a diverse range of texts which are selected and agreed upon by our English Lead to ensure a progressive curriculum is in place.
Some of the brilliant texts explored in Year 5 are; Clockwork by Phillip Pullman, The Last Bear by Hannah Gold and Skellig by David Almond.
In writing, children will learn to develop more complex sentences and develop more sophisticated writing. They will explore increased focus on authorly choice as they widen the number of writing tools. In addition, children will learn more about speech in writing and develop more varied sentences and tense forms.
In Maths, children will continue to practise their times tables so that they can apply them to more challenging problems and work beyond 12×12. Please support your child to use times table rockstars at home at least three times per week.
Here is a sneak peek at some of the amazing units of work that will be explored;
- History – Anglo-Saxons vs Vikings
- Geography – Natural Hazards
- Science – space
- DT – moving toys
- Art – 3D masks
