Useful Information for Reception

Reading Books

Please bring in your reading books on a Thursday, and you will be sent home with new ones on a Friday. The phonics books that come home will match with teaching in our classroom, so children can practise what they are learning with you alongside this.

Seesaw

At Headlands, we use the Seesaw App to communicate with parents. Seesaw is a  secure online journal where we can share what your children are learning in class. You can find out more information and a link to download the app here.

PE

Catkins class has PE on Tuesdays and Acorns has PE on Wednesdays. Forest school takes place on a Thursday afternoon.  Please ensure that children come to school in their correct PE kit. Longer hair should be tied up. Thank you for your support!

Home Learning

  • Please read your child’s reading book with them three times per week
  • Practise with grapheme cards and tricky words daily
  • Share a book as a bedtime story every day. You can borrow from the EYFS lending library on a ongoing basis (available before and after school each day).

Learning in Reception

For more information on our phonics program, Little Wandle Letter and Sounds, please follow the link to our phonics page. Early reading is important, and it is vital that children are supported at school and at home to succeed.

As children move through the year, they will be guided to develop their gross and fine motor skills, be creative, be active and learn about the world around them through play and tailored experiences. We love to see the way our reception children grow through the year and you will be amazed by their progress!

The prime areas of learning and development are;
• Communication and language
• Physical development
• Personal, social and emotional development

The specific areas of development, which support the prime areas are;
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the world
• Expressive arts and design

Our experienced and approachable reception team will greet you at the door each morning and communicate with you regularly regarding your child’s development. You will find them reassuring as they support you with their Eary Years expertise to ensure that your child get the best possible start in their school life!
